The First Rule of Fight Club

Fight Club has been my favorite movie ever since my first viewing. From the actors, directors and the hidden meaning of the movie, it all creates such a powerful movie. The "First Rule of Fight Club" scene has to be one of the most memorable scene of the movie, due to their memorable lines, as well as the editing and directing techniques Fincher had used. The scene shows Fight Club being held in the basement of a bar with dim lighting and no windows connecting them to the outside world with someone in the back telling everybody to keep it down. Then Tyler said his infamous line “First rule of Fight Club, you do not talk about Fight Club,” the camera circle around Tyler, breaking the 180 rule, but for the purpose of showing the members being fully hooked on his speech, suggesting a religious sentiment. Then there was a hard cut to a medium shot of a man, and as the camera pans down it shows a man taking his belt off. This shot was utilized to strengthen the theme of sexuality, the action can resemble that of a guy eagerly taking of his belt to fornicate, symbolizing that fighting gives the same satisfaction and validation of masculinity that sex would. This shot was exaggerated due to the cutting of a close shot of the belt coming off as well as the sound of the belt pulled off is heightened. Then the camera pans to switch from Tyler talking to the fighting, it does it in a way as if the camera is going into the view of Tyler which can be seen as a strategy to show an existential philosophical concept known as the Other and the Gaze. Fincher then directed the shot of the members circling and gawking at the two men fighting in the center. Using a montage approach to present the atmosphere as well as what goes on during Fight Club. After the men were done fighting they were welcomed with shouts of approval which resulted to a smile from one of the bloody face. Showing the true motive for their actions, approval from the male Gaze and remains to follow the societal ideals created by previous generations. This scene is an important scene because it foreshadows the evolution of Fight Club.
