Final Blog

Kirsten Johnson's lecture was a bit unorthodox but was both eye-opening and inspirational. Often times, when I imagine creating a film or just shooting a scene, I am way too focused on the bigger picture. This often would lead me to create basic shots. Though her ideas on perspective reminded me of why I started and fell in love with film. It's to convey personal emotions, shot through the perspective of myself. Kirsten emphasized the importance of perspective by deliberately moving all throughout the lecture hall. By constantly moving we're able to constantly learn more about her, your perception of her when she is on the other side of the lecture hall is way different from when she is staring down your face three feet away. Which is another lesson that she taught us indirectly; to be comfortable with doing anything to get your shot. It was immediately clear to us that her way of shooting is very up close and personal. For me personally, I'm not quite as comfortable sh...

The First Rule of Fight Club

Image
Fight Club has been my favorite movie ever since my first viewing. From the actors, directors and the hidden meaning of the movie, it all creates such a powerful movie. The "First Rule of Fight Club" scene has to be one of the most memorable scene of the movie, due to their memorable lines, as well as the editing and directing techniques Fincher had used. The scene shows Fight Club being held in the basement of a bar with dim lighting and no windows connecting them to the outside world with someone in the back telling everybody to keep it down. Then Tyler said his infamous line “First rule of Fight Club, you do not talk about Fight Club,” the camera circle around Tyler, breaking the 180 rule, but for the purpose of showing the members being fully hooked on his speech, suggesting a religious sentiment. Then there was a hard cut to a medium shot of a man, and as the camera pans down it shows a man taking his belt off. This shot was utilized to strengthen the theme of sexuali...

Soundwalk

Soundwalk Through East Village Headphones off, and ears on. I've always thought I've fully grasped the environment of my favorite area in the East Village but to my surprise, this exercise proved to me that I only know a small portion of it. It was ignorant of me to assume I've taken in the entirety of this area when I only walked through it with music blasting in my ears muffling the sound of the city.  I had the assumption that the biggest instrument of the city was the sirens or the screech and honks of a car. Though this exercise made me realize that the biggest instrument of the city was the human voice. I often find myself eavesdropping on people's conversations, understanding a little more of their world. The constant conversations of people's latest purchase or their stories of meeting the famous avant-garde designer, Rick Owens. Being that the area I was walking through is the hub of fashion, it only made sense that conversations of fashion are the sou...

Artist Statement

The idea that you are able to encapsulate a certain time, a moment, is where my love of filming are rooted from. As we trek unto our own individual journey, moments of joy, love and happiness occur and those moments and to let those moments just fleet away into our memories are sometimes just not enough. I aspire to film things that are able to make people reflect on their own special moments. My style of film making revolves around a personal connection between the camera and the subject. I want to be able to capture all the emotions that the subject is evoking as well as making it relatable to the audience. Often portraying simple and joyous moments, so my style of editing incorporate a vibrant color grading to capture the warmth of these special occasions. Being the generation of the internet, I am constantly digesting different mediums. Due to the availability of everything, I often try to incorporate my personal taste into the videos, whether it be incorporating my favorite musi...
